It has been in the news for about a week now, warning everyone about the storm heading our way from Arctic Front. It is arriving a little earlier than last year, usually in February so who is to say we won’t get another Winter Storm then. Friday will be the last day to prepare for an Arctic blast, so let’s focus on home safety, like covering exterior pipes, let your indoor faucets drip a little bit and seal drafts. Remember if you need to use a personal heating device like a space heater, exercise caution to prevent possible fire emergencies. As for your vehicles, a full tank of gas is recommended, check wipers and lights to ensure they are in good working condition. If possible having an emergency kit in your vehicle just in case you need it. And personal readiness, stock up on food, water, and medications. If you have to go outside, dress in layers, wear gloves and cover your head. We also have older residents who live alone, check on your neighbor and see if they need anything. And let’s not forget our furry pets, please bring your dogs and cats inside as the temperatures will start dropping tomorrow evening accompanied with freezing rain. Remember, our pets rely on their owners to keep them safe, warm and fed. If it isn’t safe for human beings to be outside in freezing temperatures, then it is not safe for your pets either. Please do not let them suffer in these conditions. If you are unable to care for your pets, ask for help, take them to a local shelter and give them a fighting chance at getting a new home. If you see a neighbor who needs help with their pets, offer to help them, even if it is an oversize box can help. Just find a place in your backyard where it will have some shelter from wind, cover it with a tarp and leave some blankets or hay inside the box. Something is better than nothing at all. If you have a storage shed or garage and are willing to let your neighbor keep their dogs in there overnight, then that would be a great help. We should always try to help our community but it is much needed during times like these.
